New Delhi – The demand for electric vehicles (EVs) continues to rise in India, with sales reaching new heights in January 2025. According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), a total of 11,266 electric cars were sold across the country during the month. This represents a 32.38% increase compared to January 2024. On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, EV sales recorded a 27.70% growth, as 8,822 units were sold in December 2024.
Tata Motors Remains Market Leader
Tata Motors maintained its dominant position in the electric vehicle market, selling 5,047 EV units in January 2025. However, the company experienced a 13.01% decline in YoY sales, as it had sold 5,802 units in January 2024. Tata’s EV portfolio in India includes popular models such as Tiago EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, and Tigor EV.
MG Motors Reports Massive Growth
MG Motors secured the second position in India’s electric car market. The company sold 4,237 electric vehicles in January 2025, achieving a 252.20% YoY growth. In January 2024, MG Motors had sold 1,203 units. The company offers models such as MG Comet EV, MG Windsor EV, and MG ZS EV, which have seen strong demand among Indian buyers.
Mahindra & Mahindra Sees a Decline
Mahindra & Mahindra, a key player in the electric SUV segment, recorded a slight dip in sales. The company sold 688 units in January 2025, compared to 784 units in January 2024, reflecting a 12.24% decrease in sales.
Hyundai and BYD Show Positive Growth
South Korean automaker Hyundai registered an increase in EV sales, with 321 units sold in January 2025. This marks a significant rise from 170 units sold in January 2024.
Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD also recorded an increase, selling 313 units in January 2025 compared to 162 units in January 2024.
Sales Performance of Other Automakers
Several other car manufacturers also contributed to the growing EV market in India. According to FADA, PCA Automobiles sold 269 units, Mercedes-Benz sold 95 units, and Kia Motors recorded 47 units in sales.
Luxury automakers also reported sales figures, with Volvo selling 27 units, Audi selling 18 units, and other brands collectively selling 23 units in January 2025.
